Evan D.Hey there STR readers! Starting next Thursday (8/5), we will be launching a new weekly feature here on Spinning the Reel. In conversations with friends and family I’ve noticed a consistent trend. Most people have seen the big, impactful movies released in the last ~30 years, but when it comes to old classics — ones that often inspire the best modern films!! — there are lots of blind spots. Some folks just have an aversion to older movies, but often it’s just really tough to find a place to start. Enter Throwback Thursday!
Each week I will post a brief review/recommendation of a film released before 1990. Sometimes it will be one of the great historic works, things like Casablanca or Citizen Kane, other times it may be something more obscure. Maybe the film will have some connection to our film of the week on the blog and podcast, many weeks it will have no relation at all. The goal here is to share the great classic movies that all cinephiles should see. This will be a discovery process for me as well, sharing some of my favorite older films but also finding new ones and filling in historical blindspots. If you have any recommendations for a Throwback Thursday film just comment below, email me at SpinningTheReelPod@gmail.com or tweet me @SpinningThe Reel. See y’all next Thursday with a review of The African Queen (1951)!
